Founded in 1980, Keystone Technical Institute (KTI) provides students with hands-on, career-focused education that matches their career goals with the needs of employers. With 19 training programs in fields like culinary, medical and dental assisting, computer networking, sterile processing, and more, students are career-ready—with employable skills—in just 10 to 18 months.
More than 500 employers have hired KTI graduates since 2006, and more than 300 participate in KTI’s externship program, which offers students fieldwork experience tailored to their programs and interests. Take for example, PinnacleHealth Surgical Associates & Rheumatology Associates. For three years, the company has relied on KTI’s medical assistant externs to assist doctors with rooming patients, taking vital signs, and reviewing medications.
“Since I’ve been here, we’ve hired four KTI graduates who all had externships here,” says Office Manager and Nurse Barry Boyer. “We were lucky that we had open positions when they finished their externships. I knew they were good people, trained very well, and performed well. I’ve always been very pleased with them.”
KTI believes that highly-skilled students make for a highly-skilled workforce. That’s why KTI hires staff and faculty who know their fields, genuinely care about the success of their students, and teach their material effectively. They do it all from professional labs and kitchens that inspire certification and licensure readiness.
“Our programs create opportunities for employer and student success,” says KTI President David W. Snyder. “We offer students access to career training that provides skills that employers need and services that help them get ahead in the workforce.”
These services include KTI’s Speaker Series, where students engage in dialogue with professionals in the industries they’ll soon be joining. At KTI’s Career Fairs, companies like Hollywood Casino and Holy Spirit Hospital set up information tables to advertise job openings to KTI students.
KTI’s list of graduate employers and extern site companies is a who’s who of Central Pennsylvania businesses, including Hershey Entertainment and Resorts, PinnacleHealth, YMCA/YWCA, and more. As KTI celebrates its 35th anniversary, it continues to build bridges between employers and students, matching the right candidates with the right employment opportunity.
Just ask Laura Morrow, Medical Assistant Specialist ’14. Her career at PinnacleHealth Surgical Associates & Rheumatology Associates began with an externship, but she was hired full-time after graduation. “Some schools are all text-book,” she says, “but not KTI. I learn better with hands-on experience and that’s what KTI gave me. I wouldn’t have the job I have now without KTI.”
